Greetings from Baltimore! I'm the new foreign correspondent for Too Many Sebastians, Megu-Chan. Hailing from the lovely, yet notoriously dangerous city pictured above, I'll bring in fresh tracks from some of Baltimore's best electronica underground and other cool stuff I come across (Bmore based or not).
A little about me? Hmm. Rolling TMS-style, I am the other Asian girl, but not to step on any toes, I'm Korean (no Korean translations provided). I can typically find some affinity with just about any track belonging to a genre that has "electro" somewhere in the name. Of course, every rule has its exceptions. If you want to know more, you can Twitter me.
To kick off my start at Too Many Sebastians, I'm posting some goodies hailing from the Baltimore/DC area. If you like them, check out the myspace links - some are going to be in the UK this summer.
Grandfather of the Baltimore Club genre that came onto the house scene in the early 90s, Scottie B is somehow larger than life around here. No introductory post from a Baltimorean on an electronica music blog can be without a track or two from the living legend. You can get more of his tracks on his record label website, Unruly Online.
♫ !!! - Heart of Hearts (Scottie B. remix)
♫ M.I.A. - Paper Planes (Scottie B. remix) <- KILLER Another "heavy hitter" in the area is Nadastrom. Comprised of Dave Nada and Matt Nordstrom, the pair was recently in the Top 10 on Beatport. They released a one hour mix for Mishka around the end of last year. I had the pleasure of seeing Dave Nada live when he opened for Sinden (of The Count and Sinden) in Baltimore last November for a Scion-sponsored dance party. They'll also be in the UK later this month with a show in London on April 24th.
♫ Nadastrom - Mishka presents Keep Watch Vol. 4 <- This is rather good. Mediafire link provided by the artists themselves. In continuation of (perhaps) introducing you to some of the "Best of Baltimore", next on the list is Dan Deacon. Having just released his album Bromst to a rather favorable review on Pitchfork Media, he has recently left on tour with Teeth Mountain, Future Islands, and a vaguely-titled gaggle of Baltimore musicians called "the ensemble." This is a little taste of Bromst, and my personal favorite track. If electric cotton candy had a taste, this would be it. I've also seen this performed live at the Baltimore Round Robin "music festival" last December. You can see my video from that performance here.
♫ Dan Deacon - Get Older
♫ Future Islands - Old Friend
Next on the list is Dj MARK BROWN. Mark lays down some pretty rad tracks, but he also (or rather, mainly) does visuals. Schooled at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), Mark now wears several hats performing, booking, living, at "Floristree", the (highly secretive and exclusive) music venue/artists lofts that were part of the reason why Rolling Stone magazine named Baltimore "Best Scene" in 2008. Mark's numerous videos can be found on his website here.
♫ Dj MARK BROWN - I'm a Rainbow Too (The Angry Kids Vs. Bob Marley Vs. Agent X Vs. Mark Brown)
♫ Dj MARK BROWN - DRAGON TRANCE
Last, but not least, a recent find passed along to me by a friend who runs the east coast label, Environmental Aesthetics, which is responsible for this guy's album releases, is Matt Diamond. Chill and ambient, but with a pulse - and somehow reminds me of Philip Glass on steroids (perhaps inspiration for the title??), Glass is good for blowing smoke, relaxing in a white ceramic tub surrounded by tealight candles, or breaking out into overly dramatic modern dance movements on a crowded dance floor.
♫ Matt Diamond - Glass (DLake mix)
BONUS!
In the spirit of joining TMS, I'm going to poke fun at Kanye West and bring him up again so we can all LOLz at his gay fish voice on this track. Despite West being a gay fish or whatever, this remix track is awesome in its own rite.
♫ Estelle - American Boy feat. Kanye West (Nadastrom Remix)
Update:
Almost forgot to mention that I will be attending this year's Coachella music festival in Indio, CA. If you're going to be there too, twitter me and let's chill. Otherwise, check back soon for my review and pics.
